We are looking for a driven Chemical Engineer
Do you want to contribute to the development of a new energy technology that can safely turn nuclear waste into emission-free energy? Are you excited about working in a hands-on deep tech start-up team that aims to make a huge impact? Do you like complex challenges? Then, we might be just the company you are looking for!
Your mission.
As a Chemical Engineer you have an essential role in our molten salt technology development. With the chemical engineering team, you ensure our salts and reactor material are up for the task: creating energy for 5-10 years under extreme conditions (temperature, corrosion, irradiation). You will work closely together with other disciplines (e.g., engineering, thermal hydraulics and reactor physics) and with external partners on simulations and experiments. This role will be primarily based in Amsterdam.
In this role you will:
- Accelerate selection, testing and qualification of our salt mix and/or reactor materials.
- Conduct computational thermochemical analysis (e.g., FactSageTM or similar software for CALPHAD modelling). Develop test requirements and plans for testing unique phenomena in a high-temperature molten salt environment including pilots, material testing and radiation experiments.
- Assist the development of test facilities, and interpret and analyse (chemical) data and results and create technical reports for our reactor design and certification.
- Present designs and analysis results for design reviews.
- Lead and initiate collaboration projects with other companies, universities and research centers.
- Interface with subcontractors and partners.
- Work on patent applications.
- Develop presentations of engineering-related projects to team members and partners.
- Work well together with a cross-functional multidisciplinary team to solve bottlenecks.
About you.
- You have a Master’s degree in chemistry / chemical engineering, material science/engineering or a related technical discipline.
- You have a minimum of 5 years’ experience in the field of chemical engineering, or have finished a PhD in that field. Experience with molten salts, high temperature fluids, actinide chemistry, nuclear fuel cycle operations, or corrosive fluid / metal interactions would be a strong plus.
- You have experience with system and process engineering design and analysis software. Experience with engineering tools such as Aspen Plus and CATIA are a plus.
- You like working in a multidisciplinary team of engineers and scientists and have done so before.
- You solve problems creatively and have strong analytical skills.
- You are a fast and eager learner that is able to see the bigger picture in complex multi-disciplinary projects.
- You are an excellent communicator in English, both spoken and written.
- You are a hands-on self-starter that likes to work in a multicultural and dynamic environment that is growing fast.
- You are able to work on multiple designs and workstreams concurrently.
- You have strong time management, prioritization, and organization skills. Project management experience is a plus
- You are willing to occasionally travel to France (e.g., 3 times a month).
- You have an intrinsic motivation to make an impact and want to contribute to a responsible energy supply.
What can you expect from us?
- Dynamic and ambitious team of nuclear technology professionals that are committed to solving today’s energy challenges.
- Unique experience in a fast-growing VC-backed deep tech start-up.
- Opportunity to work on a game-changing technology that reduces our carbon footprint and nuclear waste streams.
- Competitive salary and an employee profit-sharing plan, personal development plan, NS business card & Netherlands Museum pass.
- Application for work/residence permit and 30% ruling will be supported by us.
- Office in the heart of Amsterdam next to the Central station, including start-up vibes, office amenities, Thursday drinks and quarterly team events.
Does this sound like a match? We are looking forward to your application!

Thorizon takes responsibility to make our company more inclusive. We need all ideas to realize our mission and want everyone to feel home in our team.
About Thorizon.
Thorizon is a developer of nuclear power solutions. The company designs and creates frontier technology for Molten Salt Reactors (MSR). Thorizon’s purpose is to accelerate the availability of clean energy and help solve the climate crisis.
Thorizon’s reactor design:
- Generates emission free energy on demand.
- Reduces nuclear waste streams by using it as fuel in combination with the abundant metal Thorium.
- Provides electricity or high temperature heat for use in industrial processes, such as hydrogen production.
We currently have a team of ~18 in Amsterdam and are opening an office in France. We are in R&D phase and aim to solidify our design through analyses, experiments, simulations and partnerships. At Thorizon, we believe a strongly coupled multidisciplinary technology development requires a culture of full openness and transparency. We therefore foster integrity, honesty, collaboration, team spirit, and taking responsibility.
