Propagation of nuclear data uncertainties to key neutronics quantities for chloride based nuclear reactors

Internship - Do you want to contribute to the development of a new energy technology that can safely turn nuclear waste into emission-free energy? Are you excited about working in a hands-on deep tech start-up team that aims to make a huge impact? Do you like complex challenges? Then, we might be just the company you are looking for!

Job description

We are looking for a driven M. Sc. Student in Nuclear Engineering or Physics (Master 2) to join our innovative and international team. Thorizon ONE reactor is an innovative Gen IV Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) based on interchangeable cartridge concept. Thorizon aims at using part of the waste coming from previous generation reactors to produce electricity and/or high quality of heat.

About Thorizon

At Thorizon, we’re a passionate team of ~ 40 spread across Amsterdam and Lyon, all working together to develop nuclear power solutions. We design and create frontier technology for Molten Salt Reactors (MSR).

Our purpose is to accelerate the availability of clean energy and help solve the climate crisis.

We are in the development phase and aim to solidify our design through analyses, experiments, simulations, and partnerships. At Thorizon, we believe a strongly coupled multidisciplinary technology development requires a culture of full openness and transparency. That’s why we foster values like unity, communication, and support to ensure we grow together as a team while achieving our purpose.

Your mission

Are you passionate about neutronics and coding? Do you have a structured methodology in approaching challenges?

You will directly contribute to the development of a code for neutronics studies. You will facilitate the understanding and quantifying of the nuclear data impact on neutronics quantities. Furthermore, you will benchmark your results against literature data. The project aims to support the development, validation, or improvement of advanced nuclear reactors by leveraging advanced computational methods.

In this role you will:

The main objective of the internship is to build a tool to perform nuclear data uncertainty propagation on key neutronics quantities (k-eff, feedback coefficients, nuclide inventory, ....). This code will be numerically benchmarked with the available literature. In the end, the tool will contribute to a better understanding of current nuclear data limitations and uncertainties, and help guide modelling, simulation, and experimental efforts within the project.

Main Tasks

  • Perform a comprehensive literature review of nuclear data propagation methods.

  • Implementation of the selected method in a python-based tool.

  • Write and perform verification tests.

  • Benchmark of the tool with public data.

  • Propose a recommended process for using the tool including data selection, results

  • visualization, further analysis, or future experimental needs.

  • Summarize findings in clear technical reports and presentations.

By the end of the internship, the candite will have:

  • Developed a structured and critical overview of nuclear data propagation techniques.

  • Gained hands-on experience with coding practices (developing, code versioning, testing, ...)

  • and neutronics codes.

  • Contributed directly to an innovative research and development effort.

  • Built strong foundations for further work in nuclear data evaluation and reactor modelling.

About you:

  • You’re close to finish your Master Degree in Nuclear Engineering or Physics.

  • You are passionate about neutronics and willing to merge existing knowledge into the Thorizon reactors.

  • Strong analytical skills and ability to synthesize complex technical information.

  • Good coding skills and associated practices is recommended.

  • Familiarity with nuclear data and uncertainties concepts are highly desirable.

  • Excellent communicator (clear is kind) in English both spoken and written. French or Dutch is a plus.

  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities, with attention to detail and accuracy.

  • You like working in an agile manner and are comfortable at the fast-moving pace of a technological scale-up.

What can you expect from us?

  • The candidate will be based at the Thorizon Amsterdam office (Energy Transition Campus Amsterdam, Grasweg 31, 1031 HW Amsterdam - The Netherlands).

  • The expected salary conditions are of 600 €/month.

  • The expected duration of the internship is of 5-6 months starting as of 1st of May 2026 (start date can also be changed depending on the needs of the candidate).

Does this sound like a match?

We are looking forward to your application!  📩 recruitment@thorizon.com
